The Humane Society of Greater Akron has offered to pay to help control the
local pet population.
The offer came during a public hearing Monday in Akron City Council chambers.
And unlike previous City Council discussions about what to do with
free-roaming cats, civility prevailed.
Even a representative from the organization most critical of Akron's
controversial cat law -- Citizens for Humane Animal Practices -- sounded a
conciliatory note.
``CHAPs wants to work with the city of Akron,'' said Cathy Wood,
co-chairperson of the animal rights group.
Cats have been an issue in Akron since the city decided in 2002 that any
seemingly stray cat could be captured and taken to the pound. During the
first year under the law, almost 2,000 cats were rounded up and most were
destroyed.
