[opinion from Express-Times]
Hunting and fishing in Pennsylvania are under attack. They must be. Why
else would sportsmen and women be pushing for a constitutional amendment
to protect their favorite pastimes? Why else would Gov. Ed Rendell support
the change? And why else would the state House of Representatives have
placed its stamp of approval on this effort last week?
Hmmm. Our sportsmen and women may be on to something. Across this
commonwealth, a number of recreational activities are under attack.
Skiing. Biking. Running. Swimming. Skateboarding. Bowling.
Keglers, unite! We need to rally the troops, form a powerful lobbying
group and convince our lawmakers that the anti-bowling league is out there
-- somewhere -- ready to strike.
Spare us the histrionics.
First, we already have the right to hunt and fish in Pennsylvania. Our
Legislature has enacted a host of rules and regulations to ensure that
hunting and fishing are enjoyable and safe. There are departments that
promote these activities and agencies that police our forests and waterways.
Second, where is the evidence that anyone is attempting to take away our
right to hunt and fish? Yes, animal rights groups are fighting against
some of the more inhumane practices that don't even qualify as sport. (The
defunct Hegins pigeon shoot comes to mind.)
