CHICAGO - The Democrats running for U.S. Senate in Illinois think the
federal government should do more to prevent mad cow disease through a
better animal tracking system, labeling so consumers know where meat came
from and increased testing of cows.

"Inventory, labeling and identification to trace various generations of
cows to be able to quickly respond to any outbreak is absolutely
essential," said Gery Chico, an attorney and former head of the Chicago
school system.

The nation's first case of mad cow disease was found in December in a
Washington state Holstein. Because the likely source of the brain-wasting
illness was contaminated feed, authorities rushed to find other cattle
that could have shared the feed. The Agriculture Department is working on
a national animal identification system that could track infected livestock.

While Chico gives the government credit for containing the spread of mad
cow disease, he agrees with his competitors that more should be done to
prevent the illness, formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
