Court Suspends Chimps Export

The High Court has suspended the export of three Ugandan chimpanzees to 
China. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) was to send the primates to 
China next week from Ngamba Chimp Island as a donation. Environment 
lawyers sought an interim order to stop the export until court decides 
on the case they filed earlier challenging the authority of the 
Government and UWA to export the chimps. At the same time, court is 
supposed to rule on March 4, 2004, on the main injunction. The 
Government had appointed a committee of senior wildlife and tourism 
officials to work out modalities of the chimp export. The team includes 
Beti Kamya, executive director of the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, 
Dr. Arthur Mugisha, UWA executive director, and Justus Tindigarukayo, 
head of the Wildlife Department. The committee had endorsed the export, 
which was supposed to be effected by March. The animals were to have 
been collected from the island sanctuary by the third week of this 
month. Then they would be shipped to Changshaa Zoo in Central Huwan 
Province in China.
