MARK COLVIN: This weekend, some high-profile Australians got together to
urge the rest of the country to think hard about organ donation.

But even if they were to succeed completely, and every eligible person in
the country who died became a donor, experts say it still wouldn't meet
the demand for hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys, eyes, and other organs.

And that's why there's some very serious research going on into using
animal parts to meet the need.

Doctors in Australia and elsewhere have already transplanted pig heart
valves into humans – but there's a big jump from that, where the valves
have had the cells that could cause infection or rejection removed, and
transplanting whole live organs.

This week, the National Health and Medical Research Council is winding up
a series of public meetings, gauging the public's feelings on the issue.
