Public debate on organ transplants from animals to humans has shown that
more Australians are fearful about cross-species disease transmission than
they were 18 months ago.
The chairman of the Federal Government working party on
xenotransplantation - the use of living animal material in humans - said
the disease fears, aired more frequently than during 2002 community
consultations, were a result of SARS and bird flu outbreaks overseas.
However, human organ recipients and families of those on waiting lists had
expressed support for xenotransplantation at meetings in eight major
Australian cities over the past fortnight.
