A CENSUS of aggressive monkeys has been made in northern India and their
migration patterns studied in a bid to learn how humans and simians can live in
harmony in the Himalayan region.
"The results will be used to formulate a comprehensive action plan to contain
the menace caused by monkeys," said Himachal Pradesh state wildlife chief AK
Gulati.
"According to the first-ever actual headcount there are 373,860 monkeys in
the state," Gulati said.
"Female monkeys outnumber males," he added.
Focus during the study was the effects of the encroachment of human
settlements into forest areas, which has brought humans and monkeys into direct
conflict, Gulati said.
