"We're looking at the possibility that it was arson," said Capt. Chris
Henderson, fire department spokesman, on Thursday.
Arson investigators are testing the dumpster to see whether accelerants were
used to start the blaze, Henderson said. A necropsy is being performed on the
animal to determine whether it burned to death or was killed before being set
on fire.
Firefighters said they think the dog was an adult, but it was so badly burned
they had trouble identifying a breed. It probably weighed about 50 pounds.
An Aurora Heights resident called the fire department about 9:45 p.m.
Wednesday to report that a dumpster was on fire in an alley behind Hope Lutheran
Church in the 1300 block of Macon Street.
Firefighters found flames engulfing the dumpster and shooting about a foot
outside of the container, Henderson said. After they extinguished the flames,
firefighters found only a small trash bag and the carcass inside.
The Aurora case is similar to cases in Arvada and Jefferson County this week.
A burglar took five dogs from the Humane Society's shelter Monday evening.
Later that night, sheriff's deputies were called to investigate two incidents
during a three-hour period in which two puppies were burned to death in
Arvada and southern Jefferson County. A third pup, a shepherd mix named Ashley by
veterinarians, is recovering from its burns at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital.
A witness saw a man holding two puppies outside the Bally's Fitness Center,
8996 W. Bowles Ave., and standing over a flaming dog. After the man was spotted
he dropped one dog but fled with the other.
The Colorado Humane Society in Englewood still is missing a large black
puppy. Taylor Rees, the society's operation manager, said staff members will talk
with Aurora to determine whether the animal firefighters found is the one they
are missing.
