News cameras rolled earlier this month as Loretta Swit, the actress who
played Maj. Margaret "Hotlips" Houlihan on the television sitcom M*A*S*H,
spoke at a press conference in Augusta. An animal welfare advocate,
Houlihan lent her star power to an effort to add a voluntary checkoff on
the state income tax form to help pay for a program to spay and neuter
pets. Based on an endorsement by the Legislature's taxation committee, the
bill is expected to win approval.

Houlihan's appearance and the reception by lawmakers were gratifying to
Mary Sheridan, past president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association.
The 325-member group unanimously supported the proposal, which will help
fund a new low-income spay/neuter program, called Spay Maine. Advocates
expect it to raise $40,000 to $60,000 a year and lead to 5,000 to 6,000
fewer unwanted pets having to be euthanized in Maine shelters.
