Nine cats and dogs died from smoke inhalation after a small fire broke out in
a Doral animal clinic Thursday morning, Miami-Dade Fire officials said.
Three cats and a caged bird at The Pet Care Clinic, 9767 NW 41st St., were
saved by firefighters, who got the call about 6:30 a.m. But six dogs and three
cats died after breathing in fumes.
Veterinarian Rick Diaz said two dog owners came by in tears.
''This is terrible. It's the biggest nightmare,'' a visibly shaken Diaz said
Thursday afternoon, standing in his damaged storefront business, which opened
in 1987.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday, but fire
officials said an electrical problem was the likely cause.
