It's been revealed that more than 500 cattle have died in feedlots across New
South Wales, from scorching temperatures and high humidity.
Around 200 head have died at both the Killara Feedlot near Quirindi and an
unidentified feedlot at Wagga Wagga.
A further 30 deaths have been reported at Walgett's Kiora operation.
Rob Sewell, from the Australian Lot Feeders Association, says the industry
has adopted new procedures to prevent heat stress, but it's hard to avoid cattle
deaths in temperatures as high as 48.5° Celsius.
"Over the start of last weekend, as listeners would be aware, there was a
string of hot days, and that has been right across the state. We had deaths in
excess of 500 head, which, considering the number of cattle on feed and the
conditions, was quite amazing and a good result, particularly with what we could
have done if some of the new management practices that we've a better
understanding of now, after the last 4 to 5 years of good research."
New South Wales Agriculture, the RSPCA and ALFA will conduct a review of the
deaths next week.
"The world is a dangerous place,
not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing."
