Louise van der Merwe, SA representative of Compassion in World Farming and
director of the Humane Education Trust, writes: Our celebrations of 10 years of
democracy in South Africa are heating up. How much prouder we could be if our
new constitution had also included the fundamental right of animals to live
lives free of torment and abuse. The lobby to the Constitutional Assembly in
1993, to grant animals this meagre dispensation, was the second largest lobby of
all. As things stand, I cannot be Proudly South African for as long as I am
not Proudly Human - and Proudly Human I can never be for as long as we continue
our violent approach towards non-human life.
At a family gathering, a relative said to me that I should give up fighting
for a better dispensation for animals because, he said, "You're not going to
win it. You've got to remember this is Africa and Africans haven't got time to
worry about animals."
