Monkeys being held for ransom by the University of Colorado

Several weeks ago, Rita Anderson of the Committee for Research
Accountability, a Project of In Defense of Animals, spoke to University of
Colorado officials about monkeys being used for breeding at CU's research
facilities. There are approximately 34 monkeys in CU's breeding colony, 31
of whom have been at the facility since birth; the oldest is nearly 18 years
old. Another monkey, a 36-year-old who was "wild caught," is slated as a
potential subject for a terminal experiment. One-third of the monkeys were
involved in Mark Laudenslager's well-known maternal-separation experiments,
which were conducted to analyze the effects of separating infants from their
mothers, and which Rita recently helped put an end to.

The officials Rita spoke with initially said they would consider releasing
some of the monkeys if a sanctuary was found. Now, even though an
accredited sanctuary has agreed to accept them, CU is asking to be paid
between $10,000-15,000 per monkey for their release. These monkeys, both
mothers and babies, have lived lives of severe depression, anxiety,
loneliness and fear, and sometimes suffered from lifelong psychological
consequences.

Please contact University of Colorado President Elizabeth Hoffman and demand
that these monkeys be released to a sanctuary immediately, without payment
to the university.
