THE RSPCA has come under fire for failing to save a pony which was left to
die over a 30-hour period at Clunes last month.
Clunes horse management consultant and riding teacher Sharon Peterson has
attacked the animal authority for failing to treat the pony and holds grave fears
for the remaining eight ponies on the property.
Ms Peterson said the horse was the third to die on the property in the past
two years and called on the authority to review its procedures.
The RSPCA has blamed old age and a possible heart attack or stroke for the
pony's death.
Ms Peterson said she first notified the RSPCA on a Saturday morning when the
horse collapsed, and after a quick visit by an inspector that afternoon, the
horse died mid-afternoon the next day.
"She (the inspector) never gave the horse a basic physical examination," she
said.
"She (the owner) was asked to get a vet and she didn't.
"The fact it was close to 30 hours before it died shows there was something
wrong with that horse."
