North Adams resident Emily Roemer said, "I think it's so, so important that dogs have some kind of training somewhere so that they understand. You never know when your life will depend on it."
Early Friday morning, Emily Roemer suffered a minor stroke and fell getting out of bed. As Roemer lay helpless and bleeding -- an incision from recent surgery re-opened in the fall -- she looked at her dog Molly and said, "Help." Molly went into the bedroom, retrieved a cordless phone and trotted back to Roemer with the phone in her mouth.
Roemer said, "She's a very intelligent dog. She has an acute sense of need, and she takes care of all my needs, that's all I know. I hope that everyone out there who's watching this takes care of their pets."
Roemer has been training Molly since she was 8 weeks old. Along with basic obedience, Roemer also taught her to grab the phone in case she needed help. Seven years later, the training paid off.
Roemer said, "When I tell her to get the phone, she'll go over to the phone and she scratches at it, I got the phone, now what? You know? Then my word, for me, is help. 'Help mommy' and she gets it for me."
Friend Holly Denault said, "You're training these dogs like kids, you know? But we bite our tongue now. All three dogs are great, but there is something special about Molly."
Roemer hasn't let Molly visit her in the hospital. She said their bond is so strong that Molly wouldn't want to leave if she saw her. Roemer hopes to be back home with Molly soon.
