THOMPSON, MB - Trappers in northern Manitoba want to pay more, yes more, for
the privilege of trapping.
They're asking for an increase in their licences.
The Manitoba Trapper's Association sees higher trap licence fees next year as
an investment in the industry's future.
About 60 trappers met in Thompson recently and spoke about raising their
licence fees by $5 next year.
Once they understood why they'd pay more, they agreed it was worth doing.
Some of the money will go toward education programs, but the bulk of it will
help fund a trap research facility in Alberta which develops humane traps.
George Dysart of South Indian Lake says he has no problems if his fee goes up
to $15.
"Oh I don't mind that," says Dysart. "You know, as long as they make good use
of the money they collect you know."
But Glen Francois of Nelson House is not as agreeable as Dysart.
"It does bother me a little bit," says Francois. "I've got kids that are
growing up now and they're going to take over the trapping and so the education
part there, yeah, I agree with."
The Manitoba Trappers Association hopes to raise about $30,000 if it gets the
fee increase approved by the province, but the trap research facility run by
the Fur Institute of Canada costs about $350,000 a year to operate.
Federal funding for the facility is expected to stop in April of this year.
"The world is a dangerous place,
not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing."
