Officials concerned about the spread of mad cow disease might learn something
from those dealing with the reappearance of avian flu.

Life on Noah’s Ark likely wasn’t this chaotic.
Back then, dealing with animals was easy: Pair them up, march them aboard and
keep a little feed on hand. Nowadays things are much more difficult.
And dangerous.
First, a cow went mad in Washington. Then chickens caught the flu in
Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
While it’s anybody’s guess where an animal-borne virus might appear next,
this much is clear — as each new one appears, new health concerns for both
animals and humans arise.
Is it safe to eat this? Is it safe to take these animals to market?
People want to know whether the food they’re eating is OK. Farmers want to
know that the animals they’ve invested in won’t die unexpectedly. And the
nation as a whole can’t bear to see another section of the economy take a hit from
import bans.
