Dog rescued from garbage truck
Last Update: 2/15/2004 8:25:08 AM
(New Port Richey-AP) -- A dog that was thrown out in the trash is recovering today from its injuries.
The honey-colored Labrador-golden retriever mix almost ended up in a Pasco County landfill Friday, unwittingly picked up by a garbage truck driver emptying commercial bins.
The dog -- named Lucky by officials at the Humane Society -- was rescued when a woman driving behind the garbage truck heard barking and yelping.
She followed the truck down a side road, honking her horn and flashing her lights to get the driver's attention.
The dog, about 1 year old and 55 pounds, had no collar. Lucky has a dislocated left hip, broken right hip and crushed pelvis. She had cuts in her mouth and on her head, possibly from eating glass, and bits of metal on her teeth, probably from eating cans.
Animal officials say Lucky likely was dumped in a trash bin because it would be difficult for a dog her size to jump into the large containers.
Lucky may have to undergo surgery before she's ready for adoption.
