PITTSFIELD -- Former Mayor Sara Hathaway has a new job promoting the
development of the New England Heritage Breeds Conservancy and coordinating its joint
venture with Great Barrington-based Project Native.
Hathaway, who last November lost her bid for election to a second two-year
term as the city's mayor, will be based at the conservancy's offices at Hancock
Shaker Village.
The conservancy and Project Native are collaborating on the establishment of
a working farm and education center at the Route 41 Sunways Farm in Great
Barrington, a 57-acre property that the groups plan to acquire from the Berkshire
Natural Resources Council.
Project Native currently operates a greenhouse on the farm; a primary aim of
the collaboration between the two groups will be to build a commercial kitchen
and classroom facilities to promote sustainable agriculture, natural heritage
and environmental stewardship through hands-on education. "Value-added
products" also will be prepared and offered for sale.
