Peggy Flanagan Priest is planning a special trip to a local feed store this
week. She plans to buy some senior horse feed and some baled wood shavings for
some horses that really need it.
Priest is just one of the several county residents who’ve stepped forward to
help Merced County Animal Control take care of eight starving horses that were
seized more than a week ago from a Planada stable.
Kristi Garrett, investigator for the animal shelter, said that the county has
prepared paperwork for both felony and misdemeanor charges against the owner
of the horses.
“We have talked to the district attorney, and we will have our reports to him
Tuesday and he could file charges the same day,” Garrett said.
When the horses were seized, a seizure notice was left on the property where
the horses were housed. The owner had 10 days to respond, which he did, and a
hearing will be held Wednesday to determine if the horses were seized lawfully.
