NEW YORK — Biology class dissections have become so common in schools
across the country, they almost seem like a right of passage. But now an
alternative method for learning is being pushed by animal rights groups
and others who are squeamish about the practice.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) (search) and the Humane
Society (search) have each asked students to refuse to perform
dissections. On their Web sites, the groups list the 11 states that give
students the legal right to say no.
