[from Urbana/Champaign News-Gazette]
During the peak of the mad cow outbreak in Great Britain in the 1990s,
about 100 cats were diagnosed with a feline version of the brain-wasting
disease.
But the risk of a cat or dog contracting mad cow disease from its pet food
is rare, said veterinarians with the University of Illinois College of
Veterinary Medicine.
Pet owners should continue feeding their cats and dogs as they normally
do, said Peter Constable, associate professor in veterinary clinical medicine.
If the United States had a mad cow epidemic, only then should some cat
owners consider checking with the manufacturers of their pet food about
how the food is made, he said.
The disease has not been found in dogs, birds, reptiles or other companion
animals, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which
regulates pet food.
