LONDON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Chickens are being set on fire or buried alive
across East Asia as countries struggle to prevent the spread of bird flu, an
animal welfare organisation said on Monday.
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) said it had received
reports from its Asian members about cruelty to chickens in disease control
campaigns in South Korea, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan.
"The slaughter of millions of chickens by burying them alive is an inhumane
and totally unacceptable method of slaughter and should be stopped
immediately," said Leah Garces, head of campaigns at the WSPA in London.
The charity, whose headquarters are in London, called on the international
bodies handling the bird flu crisis to ensure animals did not suffer
unnecessarily in the slaughter campaigns.
"The world is a dangerous place,
not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing.",
