Chennai, Feb 16:
Illegal and unchecked slaughter of cattle across the country is
leading to a fast decline in its population, K Babu, consultant-secretary, Animal
Welfare Board of India, has said.
Speaking at a function organised in Chennai Saturday to give away
prizes to children who had taken part in contests during the Animal Welfare
Fortnight celebrations held last month, Babu said cattle population in the country,
which was estimated to about 20 crore, constituted one-fourth of the total
cattle population in the world, but this number was decreasing due to illegal
and unchecked slaughter. 'The Constitution has laws on animal welfare. If they
are implemented properly and enforced, cruelty to animals could be stopped', he
said.
