Wanted: Experienced horse people with room available in their barns and
hearts to provide homes to huge, homeless, semi-wild pregnant horses.

"This is number 82. Isn't she a whopper?" said Doreen Gray, carefully
stroking the shaggy head of a Belgian draft horse mare. The horse was munching hay
from a large round bale in Gray's frozen LeBoeuf Township barnyard. "She's still
a little skittish, so I can't handle her too much yet."

Number 82 flinched and stepped sideways. Meanwhile, another shaggy specimen
wearing an electric blue halter and a number 37 sticker on her haunches nudged
Gray's shoulder and blew from her nostrils into Gray's hair. "But this one you
can't get rid of," Gray said, hugging the golden-colored head hanging over
her shoulder.

"She's too thin. She's taking the move pretty hard and dropping weight. We'll
have to keep her inside and fatten her up some."

Doreen Gray took in a bunch of pregnant mares that were due to go to the
slaughter house after the Premarin industry went belly-up. (Janet B. Campbell)
