Guards and scientists have spotted the mountain lion a dozen times since July

LIVERMORE -- Once, workers at a high-security government weapons lab here
could stroll its pastoral back forty. They could lunch by themselves, away from
the armed guards and towering fences strung with barbed wire.
Then a shadow flickered in the grass.
It slinked among the low hills of this former ranch, now the outer perimeter
of Sandia National Laboratories-California. Management posted signs full of
capital letters and a snarling, fanged beast.
"Should you choose to walk here anyway, you are doing so at your own risk. If
you are still compelled to walk at Sandia, use the buddy system, and do not
walk alone."
Sandians retreated inside the inner perimeter. But even in daylight, the
intruder penetrated the lab's defenses, slipping effortlessly past or over 9-foot
security fences, unseen by the sleepless sweep of video cameras. People saw it
prowling outside Sandia's core laboratories.
A cougar, it seems, has adopted one of the nation's nuclear-weapons labs. It
hasn't threatened a soul, apparently not even molested its preferred prey, a
handful of mule deer. But landscapers, guards and scientists have spotted the
mountain lion a dozen times since July, the latest two weeks ago.
