On a dirt track removed from the spotlight and glory reserved for more
glamorous entertainment at the Riverside County Fair and National Date
Festival in Indio, a small herd of athletes competed for something beyond
medals and glory.
They competed for a cookie.
And just because the 12 pigs who make up the Hedricks Exotic Animals pig
racing team are inspired by Oreos, not honor, they prepare like any other
athlete seeking the thrill of victory.
...
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals opposes animal-based competitions.
The groups Web site boasts it convinced the North Brunswick, N.J. City
Council to cancel pig races planned at a Garden State youth festival.
The group said it "emphasized the negative message that exploiting animals
for profit sends to children" in lobbying against the event.
"Fortunately, the City Council made the compassionate decision to mandate
that the pig-racing event be canceled," PETA later reported.
