"When horses come here near death, starved or injured, they seem to know
they're safe," says Resnik, 39, of Stuart.
Since 1996, 30 horses with names such as Duchess, Princess, Rocky and Gentle
Ben have been rescued.
Some horses were severely malnourished, with skin rot, missing teeth and
overgrown hooves. Shrunken tendons forced a former carriage horse to walk on his
toes. Panicked by a thunderstorm, a former racehorse plowed head-first into a
fence and lost both eyes.
