Domestic demand for poultry products have gone down by up to 30 per cent
owing to the bird flu scare.

However, local poultry farm owners said the market reaction is unwarranted
given the quick reaction from authorities, stringent border controls and regular
inspections of poultry farms by veterinary officials.

Imports of chicken from 10 Asian countries were banned soon after news of the
bird flu outbreak was publicised.

"The producers as well as the authorities are taking all precautions to
ensure that the UAE is free of bird flu of any strain," said Dr Hussein Hassanin,
technical secretary of the Emirates Poultry Producers Association (EPPA).

Despite the ban, however, the bigger threat is posed by the UAE's continued
importation of chicken droppings as fertilisers.
