Scores of research animals at Rocky Mountain Laboratories died last weekend,
setting back on-going research of fatal brain diseases such as chronic wasting
disease, officials said in a statement released Thursday.
Nearly 90 animals were found dead Sunday morning after a heating malfunction
caused the temperatures to climb up to 100 degrees in the animal holding
facility on the Hamilton campus. A lab spokesperson said 13 squirrel monkeys and 74
hamsters died from hyperthermia during the night.
The animals were part of research on transmissible spongiform
encephalopathies - fatal brain diseases associated with the misshapen protein molecules,
including chronic wasting disease in deer and elk, mad cow disease, scrapie in
sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in humans. Seventeen of the squirrel monkeys
and dozens of hamsters involved in the TSE research survived the night as did
all of the 14 macaques monkeys, officials said. All of the animals remained in
their cages, and officials said there was never any risk to RML staff or
community members.
