A 2 1/2-year-old boy is in Waikato Hospital in a stable condition after major
facial surgery following a dog attack at a family gathering in Thames on
Saturday night.

The boy had surgery yesterday to repair serious cuts to his face and scalp.
The attack happened about 7.30pm on Saturday when the boy was playing in the
back yard of a house in Hauraki Tce. Thames constable Peter Comer said the dog
was a pitbull type breed.
He said the dog had been impounded by the Thames dog ranger and was likely to
be destroyed, although that was an issue for Thames Coromandel District
Council.
