Bird flu claimed its 20th fatality in Asia this weekend with the death of a
13-year-old boy in Thailand as Beijing held an exercise to prepare for a
possible outbreak of the disease.
.
On Sunday, the Chinese Agriculture Ministry reported two more suspected
outbreaks of bird flu, in central province of Hubei and the southwestern province
of Yunnan, according to Xinhua, the official press agency.
.
The Thai boy died late Saturday in the country's northeast, where he had been
in intensive care since testing positive on Thursday for the avian flu virus,
A(H5N1), said a senior Public Health Ministry official, Charal Trinvuthipong.
.
It is confirmed to have killed 6 people in Thailand and 14 in Vietnam.
.
The boy, Ekaphan Pongkhan, died after more than two weeks in a hospital. He
became sick 10 days after his family's chickens started dying mysteriously. The
boy and the other confirmed Thai victims - four boys aged 6 to 7 and a
58-year-old woman - are thought to have caught the virus from direct contact with
infected poultry. But fears persist that the virus could combine with a human
flu virus to become a deadly disease that can spread among people.
