AR-News: (France) Asia bird flu toll rises to 20 as Thai boy dies

Bird flu claimed its 20th fatality in Asia this weekend with the death of a 
13-year-old boy in Thailand as Beijing held an exercise to prepare for a 
possible outbreak of the disease.

On Sunday, the Chinese Agriculture Ministry reported two more suspected 
outbreaks of bird flu, in central province of Hubei and the southwestern province 
of Yunnan, according to Xinhua, the official press agency.

The Thai boy died late Saturday in the country's northeast, where he had been 
in intensive care since testing positive on Thursday for the avian flu virus, 
A(H5N1), said a senior Public Health Ministry official, Charal Trinvuthipong.

It is confirmed to have killed 6 people in Thailand and 14 in Vietnam.

The boy, Ekaphan Pongkhan, died after more than two weeks in a hospital. He 
became sick 10 days after his family's chickens started dying mysteriously. The 
boy and the other confirmed Thai victims - four boys aged 6 to 7 and a 
58-year-old woman - are thought to have caught the virus from direct contact with 
infected poultry. But fears persist that the virus could combine with a human 
flu virus to become a deadly disease that can spread among people.
