Heartbreaking scenes of starving horses greeted Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals inspectors when they raided a farm belonging to a
veterinarian in the Swartland this week.

The SPCA removed 16 horses, including 13 thoroughbred racehorses, from the
farm following allegations of severe neglect.

Experts have described the horses' condition as shocking and said some of
them were up to 100kg underweight.

The action follows reports to the SPCA that the horses were living in
appalling conditions with little or no food or water.

'Their condition varies from very poor to poor'
The veterinarian, whose identity is known to Sunday Tribune, was approached
for comment, but he refused.

The horses were taken to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA horse care unit in Grassy
Park.
