Animal welfare officials desperate to stop the significant growth in the
city's cat population are looking for ways to change the way Winnipeggers
think about -- and take care of -- their felines. "We recognize that we
can't keep on doing things the same way and expect to get different
results," Winnipeg Humane Society executive director Vicki Burns said
earlier this week. "It's very, very disheartening to have to deal with so
many cats all the time. We've got to come up with something."

Last year, the local humane society was forced to euthanize 2,438 of the
6,004 cats it took in. That's 450 more cats put down than in 2002, when
1,988 were euthanized.

In comparison, just 239 dogs were euthanized in 2003, and most of those
were due to medical or behaviour problems or at the owner's request.
