A SENIOR police officer has lost part of his ear after it was bitten off by a
monkey near the eastern Indian city of Calcutta.

Rathin Thakur, an assistant commissioner of police, was attacked by the
monkey on his way to work Thursday in Belgharia, 20km north of Calcutta, police
official S. Dutta said.
Thakur, 56, waved at a group of monkeys sitting on a rooftop and the gesture
prompted one of them to jump on his shoulder and snatch his glasses, Mr Dutta
said.
The monkey tore off part of his right ear as Thakur tried to retrieve his
glasses, he said.
Local residents had complained to police earlier the monkeys had become a
threat to people in the neighbourhood.
