BANNED pit bull terriers could again become legally available in Queensland
if proposed animal welfare initiatives are adopted.
The recommendations are part of an attempt to devise uniform policies
throughout Australia on animal cruelty, safety and care.
The first draft of the strategy – being developed by the national
consultative committee for animal welfare – will go to the Federal Government for
approval in April, and specific initiatives are expected to be drawn up from May.
Executive director of Animals Australia and committee member Glenys Oogjes
said the group would debate the strict dangerous-dogs laws in force in
Queensland.
"In Queensland animals deemed to be pit bull terrier types cannot even be
kept and can be seized and put down, but they are allowed in Victoria," Ms Oogjes
said.
