Calgary - A man has been charged with animal abuse after a four-month-old 
kitten was brought into the humane society with a broken rib, fractured jaw and 
chest injuries.

Kelly Barton, a special constable with the Calgary Humane Society, says in an 
earlier incident Dakota suffered two fractured vertebrae, a bruised lung and 
severe head trauma.
"Under the current laws, we could get a maximum of six months in jail and a 
$2,000 fine," Barton said. "Our feeling on that is that is not a near strong 
enough penalty. This is an act of violence against an innocent, defenseless 
animal." 
Barton says the man wasn't the cat's owner.
