New laws to kill 3000 deer hounds in North East 
UP to 3000 dogs in the North East will have to be destroyed because of 
changes to deer hunting regulations, it was claimed yesterday. 
Mr Ian Tanner, who has helped organise a protest rally at Wangaratta tomorrow 
morning, said the Victorian Governments decision to ban the use of foxhounds 
to scent trail sambar deer would have a devastating impact. 
“Weve got dogs that will have to be killed to be kind,” Mr Tanner, of 
Wangaratta, said. 
He estimated between 2000 and 3000 North East hounds, which have been used 
for sambar hunting, faced destruction because of the switch in rules from April 
24.
