BEIJING - Fourteen pandas on loan overseas bring in more than 50 million yuan
(S$10 million) a year for Sichuan province, Chinese media reported yesterday.

Forestry official Li Guoming said the 'income' from the United States, Japan,
Thailand and other nations is used for environmental protection work in
Sichuan, where about 800 of the rare animals live.
Their numbers have been depleted by low fertility, logging, poaching and
periodic shortages of their staple food, bamboo.
Only about 1,000 of them are thought to exist in the wild and about 150 in
captivity, mainly in China.
