The French branch of the World Wildlife Fund is launching a major
conservation project in France's overseas territories.

Special funds have been made available for the 10-year project, which
includes New Caledonia.

World Wildlife France says the aim is to conserve the unique tropical and
subtropical dry forests there.

It says New Caledonia is a very special piece of land that sustains many
unusual species.

The island was isolated for millions of years and it is still home to a
number of ancient species that have died out elsewhere.

The fund says the species are under threat from pasture-clearing,
grass-eating animals, and predation by introduced species.
