Chandigarh, February 12: THUMBS-DOWN to chicken, thumbs-up to fish. The
diehard non-vegetarians have made their choice clear. If chicken’s coming with the
flu scare, switch over to fish. Demand’s up, so is price — by 30 to 40 per
cent in various fish category.
‘‘Rahoo which was earlier going for Rs 60 a kg, is now costing Rs 85,’’
says Vijay Kumar, president of the Meat Market Association, Sector 21. ‘‘
Singhara (desi fish) which was selling for Rs 80 a kg is now going for Rs 140; Malli
is now priced at Rs 110 against Rs 70 per kg and Sole, which was costing Rs
120 a kg, is now going for Rs 180. Katla has touched Rs 80 as compared to Rs 55
per kg,’’ he adds.

Like fresh water fish, sea fish are also costing more, says Kumar. Sea
Singhara is up from Rs 40 a kg to Rs 70, White Pomfret has touched Rs 180 against Rs
110 per kg, Black Pomfret is going for Rs 120 against Rs 70a kg, Hilsa is
available for Rs 140 a kg as compared to Rs 90 and Silind now costs Rs 75 per kg
against Rs 40.
