Managers of a battery farm south of Auckland have denied claims of cruelty
after anonymous activists said they had liberated 44 starving hens from cages
containing the decomposing bodies of thousands of other birds.
Bob Kerridge of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said
officers were investigating the Glenbrook property, but so far had found "what
you would expect on a battery farm".
Mainland Poultry Ltd said the hens had been culled humanely, but the
contractor had not arrived to remove the carcasses.
