THE criminals behind an underground dog fighting ring which has left a trail
of mutilated animals across the North West were today warned that a police
raid is imminent.
The warning came as the USPCA in the North West today highlighted a shocking
catalogue of ill-treatment of pets in the region.
And it has also emerged that there are currently 10 prosecution cases for
animal cruelty being pursued through the courts in Londonderry alone.
The USPCA today said cases of animal neglect in the county had reached
epidemic proportions with new calls being logged every day concerning cases of abuse.
Derry County Welfare Officer Penny Keys said a number of horrific incidents
had come to light in recent months.
In one case, welfare officers found the corpse of a dog that had died after
being locked in a flat in Derry city when the owners moved home.
