While searching a house for drugs a few months ago, Barren County Sheriff’s
Deputy Chris Eaton found more than he’d bargained for.
He moved some boxes out from under a bed and found a 5-foot-long, 50-pound
alligator staring him down.
Because of that, two counties are in the process of passing ordinances to
restrict ownership of exotic animals. Butler County approved its ordinance Monday
and Barren County will have second reading on a similar ordinance Feb. 17.
Butler County Judge-Executive Hugh Evans said the county’s conservation
officer proposed the ordinance because of the worry of diseases exotic animals
might carry, not to mention dangerous situations.
“Why would anybody need anything like that?” Evans said.
