URGENT ALERT: SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE POLL ON FOIE GRAS

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/02/10/MNG7T4SRV71.DTL

Please take a moment to visit the website (link above) of the San Francisco
Chronicle and vote in support of a ban on foie gras in California. The
Chronicle ran an article today (02/10) about a bill that's being introduced
by California Senator John Burton to ban the sale and production of foie
gras in the state. (The bill does not yet have a number.)

Foie gras is made by force feeding ducks and geese several times per day,
which eventually causes their livers to swell up to ten times normal size.
Force feeding can result in injury to the birds (metal pipes are inserted
into their esophagus to deliver the food) and the process causes them to
develop chronic liver disease, called hepatic lipidosis. The birds endure
this process for several weeks before they are slaughtered to produce foie
gras.

The Chronicle poll is currently running 53 percent in favor of a ban of
this inhumane practice versus 41 percent for and six percent undecided.
Help us speak for the animals and enter your vote for the foie gras ban.
(NOTE: You don't have to be a California resident to vote.)
