Pain in Farm Animals
An investigation of how bad it is and
what can be done about it

Professor Vince Molony obtained his BVSc from the University of Liverpool
and joined the Veterinary Profession (MRCVS) as a general practitioner for
two years, before teaching at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell
University, where he obtained an MSc in Neuroanatomy. He returned to the
University of Liverpool where he obtained a PhD for studies of the neural
control of breathing in birds. He then joined the Department of Veterinary
Physiology at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of
Edinburgh, where he now holds a Personal Chair in Animal Welfare. His
current research focuses on the mechanisms underlying acute and chronic pain
and on pain in farm animals. He has been particularly prominent in
investigating the pain associated with castration and tail docking.
