Calgary - The Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is happy to 
announce that Dr. Rod McFarlane has been appointed to the position of 2004 
AVMA President.

Dr. McFarlane has been a member of the AVMA Council, representing South 
Alberta Region since January 2001. He currently sits on the AVMA Animal 
Welfare Committee and in previous years has served on the Registration 
Committee.

Dr. McFarlane carried out his undergraduate studies and Masters Degree in 
Marine Biology at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He then went 
on to do research with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He and his 
wife Shelley developed an aquaculture business raising rainbow trout, 
oysters and mussels. During this period Dr. McFarlane was Treasurer and then 
Vice President of the Nova Scotia Aquaculture Association. The next career 
move for Dr. McFarlane was to enter the Atlantic Veterinary College in 
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. During this time he developed an 
interest in small animal medicine and surgery. Upon graduation Dr. and Mrs. 
McFarlane traveled to Lethbridge and Dr. McFarlane initially did some 
consulting work for the Alberta Fish Farmers Association then began working 
at a mixed animal practice. He currently owns and operates two companion 
animal practices in Lethbridge, Highlands Pet Hospital and Westgate 
Veterinary Clinic.
