XI'AN, Feb. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Tourists to Xi'an, a city with a history of
over 3,000 years and the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province, will
have the chance to view animals roaming andfrolicking about in the wild since
a safari park in suburban Xi'anbegan receiving animals on Tuesday.
With the first batch of animals moved to the new park, the Xi'an city
zoo, built in 1954, closed its door to visitors Tuesday.
Covering 27.46 hectares, the city zoo, the largest of its kind in western
China, is home to more than 1,680 animals of 153 species.
The 133-hectare safari park, located in mountainous areas 28 kilometers
southwest of Xi'an city proper, is scheduled to receivevisitors on May 1 this
year.
Tan Song, deputy head of the city zoo, said the purpose of resettling
caged animals from urban areas to the wild was to provide a larger living space
for various animals and a better environment for animals to reproduce.
Tan said his zoo had seen a marked drop in the births of some sensitive
animals like orangutans and bustards due to the noisy environment of the urban
area in recent years. And there were reports that frightened by big noises,
golden monkeys abandoned their newborns.
All the animals of the city zoo were expected to arrive at their new home
in the safari park before May 1, Tan said. Enditem
