In the weak February sun, the dark brown stallion stood quietly Monday
morning. He’d been rescued three days ago from appalling conditions in Planada, and
now his life hung in the balance.
Veterinarian Faye Burton of Turlock’s Taylor Veterinary Hospital gave the bad
news to Kristi Garrett: There was nothing that could be done for the stallion’
s injury: Euthanasia was the only option.
The stallion was one of nine horses that Garrett, investigator for Merced
County Animal Control, seized from the Planada property, and this wasn’t the
first time the horses’ owner had animals seized. Just one year ago, another
starving horse had been taken from the man, but charges were never filed against
him.
Jim Swanson, deputy district attorney for Merced County, said that
verification of ownership has been the roadblock in filing charges.
