MURCHISON -- Black Beauty Ranch has 40 new residents, but hopefully they're
only temporary.

Wild burros from Death Valley and Mojave National Parks in Southern
California have been trucked to the ranch, located just outside Murchison, in a
cooperative effort with the federal government to find homes for the unwanted animals.

Ranch manager and wildlife biologist D.J. Schubert -- who took over last year
after the tragic death of ranch manager Chris Byrne -- hopes they're not
around long enough to make themselves at home.

"We're hoping to find good homes for all of them, so we can get another
shipment of rescued burros and find good homes for them, too," Schubert said. "We
have an agreement to accept up to 100 burros per year. After all, that's why
Black Beauty Ranch was founded in the first place."
